Baltimore, Md.-- Junior Kaly Winslow (Leesburg, Va.) hit a three run homer and freshman pitcher Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) struck out 12 in her fifth complete game shutout of the season as the UMBC Softball team defeated Robert Morris, 5-0, on the first day of the La Quinta Inn & Suites BWI Classic at UMBC.

UMBC (10-10) was the designated visiting team, and in the top of the first Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md.) lead off the game with an infield single. She then moved to second on a groundout, stole third and scored on a Logan Hawker (Mechanicsville, Va.) RBI grounder. Hawker actually reached on the grounder when the Robert Morris (4-18) fielder misplayed the ball. She eventually moved to third on a Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) double and then scored on a wild pitch.

The score remained 2-0 until the top of the sixth when Valerie Hammett (Mechanicsville, Md.) doubled to left and Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va.) reached on an infield single. Winslow then golfed an 0-2 pitch over the left field fence for her third homer of the season to put the Retrievers up 5-0.

Coppersmith (7-6) recorded at least one strikeout in every inning, including striking out the side in the third and sixth, and allowed just four hits.

Imani Dawson (Hanover, Md.) had a single and a double, and was the only player in the game with multiple hits. Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.) also had a hit, while Keffler added a stolen base.

UMBC faces Robert Morris tomorrow at 11 am, followed by a non-conference matchup with defending America East champion UAlbany at 1 p.m.
