Fresh off of a sweep of Coppin State on Wednesday, the UMBC Softball team (9-10) hosts Robert Morris and UAlbany for the La Quinta Inn & Suites BWI Classic this Friday-Sunday at UMBC Softball Stadium.
Freshman Logan Hawker(Mechanicsville, Va.) and sophomore Sierra Pierce(Youngstown, Ohio) each drove in four runs on the day as the UMBC Softball team swept visiting Coppin State, 5-2 and 11-3 (6) on Wednesday afternoon.
Pierce had go ahead hit in both games, while Hawker hit her first career home run in game two. All three pitchers in the staff factored in the sweep as Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) and Gillian McCarthy (Northfield, N.J.) each picked up wins and Valerie Hammett (Mechanicsville, Md.)picked up her first career save.
Scouting Robert Morris (4-16):
The Colonials enter after earning a doubleheader split on Wednesday at Penn State (W, 4-1, L, 11-0). RMU is led on offense by Abrielle McCartney, who is batting .291 with a home run and seven RBI. She also leads the team in hits (16), doubles (three) and stolen bases (two). Dana Vatakis (3-5) heads up the Colonials rotation with a team-best 4.46 ERA. She has 14 strikeouts and 18 walks on the season.
Scouting UAlbany (7-7):
The defending America East champions are already in Maryland as the Great Danes swept local rival Mount St. Mary's (4-2, 5-2) in Emmitsburg on Wednesday.
Katie Falotico is batting .326 with 10 RBI, 15 hits, nine runs, five doubles two triples and 24 total bases, all team bests. Celeste Verdolivo has seen the bulk of the action in the circle so far for UAlbany. She is 5-3 with a 2.65 ERA, five complete games and 20 strikeouts. Both games between UMBC and UAlbany will be counted in the standings as non-conference games.
