The UMBC Softball kicks off a 16 game homestand on Wednesday when it plays host to local rival Coppin State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
Scouting UMBC (7-10):
The Retrievers enter the day having won their final game of the Maryland Invite, a 3-0 victory over Villanova. Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) drove in all three runs via a pair of two-out singles. Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) shutdown the Wildcats, striking out 13, while walking one and allowing two hits in the the complete game shutout.
Pierce leads the team in average (.365), RBI (11), Hits (19), OBP (.400), slugging (.462) and doubles (five). Coppersmith is 5-6 in the circle with a 2.00 ERA, 120 strikeouts and only 33 walks in 73.2 innings.
Scouting Coppin State (2-10):
The Lady Eagles travel to UMBC on a four game slide. They were swept in a doubleheader at Towson on Tuesday, 12-0 (5) and 15-0 (5).
Cloe Ochoa and Melanie Aguilera each entered the week batting .444 with eight hits for the Eagles. Ochoa had a team-best 1.264 OPS and six RBI, while Aguilera leads the team with two stolen bases. Pitcher Madison Didion entered the week with a 2-3 record and leading the team in ERA (5.67), Innings (21.0) and WHIP (1.29).
