Softball Heads to D.C. for Colonial Classic

This weekend, the UMBC Softball team travels to Washington D.C. for the Colonial Classic hosted by George Washington. The Retrievers will start play on Friday against Canisius (9 a.m.) and the host Colonials (1 p.m., ESPN+). On Saturday, UMBC closes out play with games at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. against Cornell and Canisius, respectively.

Scouting UMBC (3-5):

Freshman pitcher Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) was honored as both America East Pitcher and Rookie of the Week after she broke her own school record with 17 strikeouts in a complete game on hit shutout of UNCW. She walked none and scored the only run of the 1-0 contest. She leads the nation in strikeouts per seven innings (13.2) and allowed only four earned runs and 12 hits in 20 innings pitched last weekend, while striking out 34.

Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) has .426 average with 12 hits, including three doubles, all team bests. She also is tied with Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.) for the team lead in runs with four, while Daigneau tops the squad in runs scored with four.

Scouting Canisius (0-6):

The Golden Griffins have not played since wrapping up a season-opening six game trip to Hawai'i on February 24. Canisius fell to the Rainbow Warriors three times (4-1, 9-6, 7-2), Depaul twice (10-3, 11-5) and New Mexico once (10-0 (5)).

Kara Paradowski paces the Griffs at the plate. Leading the team in average (.500), ops (1.1.61), hits (nine), runs (four), at bats (18), total bases (11), slugging (.611), on base percentage (.550) and walks (two). Alexis Churchill and Emily Nicosia have combined to pitch 24 of the 35 innings played. Churchill hs a 5.68 ERA, while Nicosia has a 6.00 ERA.

Scouting George Washington (13-3):

The Colonials are riding a three game winning streak and are a perfect 6-0 at home so far in 2019. They are 10-1 in their last 11 games, including wins over North Carolina and Maryland. Sierra Lange leads GW both at the plate and in the circle. She is tops on the team in batting average (.500), hits (26) and total bases (39). She also has a 1.277 OPS, with six doubles, two triples, one homer, 11 RBI and 13 runs scored.

In the circle, Lange is 10-2 with a 1.51 ERA in 13 appearances. She has 67 strikeouts and 14 walks in 65 innings pitched.

Scouting Cornell (0-5):

The Big Red also have been off since wrapping up the five game Madeira Beach (Fla.) Invite on February 24. Cornell dropped contests to five different teams: Siena (10-2), South Dakota (6-0), Drexel (11-0 (6)), Detroit Mercy (5-0) and Manhattan (11-9). Emily McKinney has a .400 average to lead the Big Red offense. She also leads the team in hits (six), doubles (three), slugging (.600) and total bases (nine).

Lisa Nelson and Katie Lew have combined to pitch 25 of the 31 innings played. Nelson is 0-3 with a 5.83 ERA, while Lew is 0-2 with a 6.46 ERA.
