Boston, Mass. -- The NCAA leader in strikeouts per seven innings (13.2), freshman Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) has been named both America East Pitcher and Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.
These are the lefty's third and fourth conference honors of the season, and she has been honored all three weeks she has competed in her young career. She earned Rookie of the Week to open the season, then last week she was named Pitcher of the Week.
Coppersmith shattered her own program record for strikeouts in a single game that she had set just one weekend earlier. On 2/24, she faced ACC foe NC State and struck out 14 batters in just six innings. This past Saturday against UNC Wilmington, she struck out 17, while allowing just one hit and no walks in a complete game 1-0 victory, in which she scored the only run.
For the weekend, she struck out 34 in 20 innings pitched over four appearances, while allowing just four earned runs and 12 hits. So far this season, Coppersmith has 63 strikeouts over 33.1 innings pitched.
The UMBC Softball team travels to Washington D.C. this weekend for the Colonial Classic hosted by George Washington.
