The UMBC Softball team returns to North Carolina as it takes part in the Courtyard by Marriott Seahawk Softball Classic hosted by UNC Wilmington. The Retrievers will face Lehigh (10 a.m.) and North Carolina A&T (5:30 p.m.) on Friday, face host UNCW (10 a.m.) and have a rematch with NC A&T (3 p.m.) on Saturday. The the tournament concludes with UMBC and Lehigh squaring off at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
Scouting UMBC (1-2):
Freshman pitcher Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) was named America East Pitcher of the Week after she struck out 19 batters over 8.2 innings, as the Retrievers split a pair of games in North Carolina last Sunday. Sophomore Imani Dawson (Hanover, Md.) hit a two-out two-run homer in the top of the sixth as the Retrievers rallied for a 3-2 win over Murray State in the morning. UMBC then loaded the bases with no outs in the top seventh against host North Carolina State in the second game, but could only get a single run across before falling 2-1.
Coppersmith leads the rotation with a 1.05 ERA with 29 strikeouts while allowing just seven hits and two earned runs over 13.1 innings. In addition to her pitcher of the Week honor, she was named America East Rookie of the Week after her 10 strikeout relief appearance in her debut against Delaware back on February 10. Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio) has started all three games is pacing the offense with a .700 average. The outfielder leads the team with seven hits, including a team-best two doubles and two RBI. She also has been solid on the defensive side, as she made a game-saving diving catch with a runner on in the seventh inning against Murray State.
Scouting Lehigh (1-1):
The Mountain Hawks were supposed to open the season last weekend in Charlotte, but the tournament got cancelled due inclement weather, so they ended up splitting a doubleheader at Seton Hall. Freshman Jaelynn Chesson went 7-for-8 at the plate, all singles, with two RBI and two runs scored. Lehigh out-hit the Pirates 32-11 on the day. Three Mountain Hawk pitchers made an appearance, combining for a 6.08 ERA. Emily Sorem worked two scoreless innings of relief in the season-opening win in the first game of the doubleheader.
Scouting North Carolina A&T (0-6):
The Aggies have struggled at the plate season, scoring just one run in six games. Vivica Boyd drove in the only run on a two-out double against Indiana. Zadaisha Waddell paces NC A&T with a .385 average, while Mohagony Headen has team-bests in starts (three), ERA (9.69) and innings (13).
Scouting UNCW (6-7):
The Seahawks went 1-2 last weekend at the Holy City Showdown in Charleston, S.C., with the lone victory being a 9-2 decision over fellow America East squad UMass Lowell. Janel Gamache has a .366 batting average and leads the team in at-bats (41), hits (15), doubles (seven) and RBI (13). In the circle, Gamache has made seven appearances with five starts going 1-3 and owning a 9.15 ERA, while Rylee Pate has made eight appearances (six starts) and is 4-2 with a 2.73 ERA.
