Boston, Mass.-- Freshman pitcher Courtney Coppersmith (York, Pa.) was named America East Pitcher of the Week after her sensational performances this past Sunday, the conference announced tuesday afternoon.
The hard-throwing lefty made her first career start at ACC foe NC State, and struck out a program-record 14, while allowing just three hits and two earned runs in a 2-1 loss. Earlier in the day, she picked up her first career win after entering in relief of UMBC's 3-2 comeback victory over Murray State. Against the Racers, the Retrievers were down 2-0 when Coppersmith entered with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the fifth. She escaped unharmed and kept Murray State of the board to wrap up the victory after UMBC scored three, two-out runs in the top of the sixth. On the day, Coppersmith struck out 19 over 8.2 innings, allowing five hits and yielding just the two earned runs.
This is the second award for Coppersmith in just two weeks of games. She was named America East Rookie of the Week for her relief appearance in which she struck out 10 and allowed no earned runs and three hits over 4.2 innings of the season opening loss to Delaware on February 10.
UMBC (1-2) travels to the Faifield Courtyard by Marriott Seahawk Softball Classic at UNC Wilmongton for five games, beginning on Friday.
