Baltimore, Md. -- Senior Haley DeLany(Lederach, Pa.) singled and reached base twice, but the UMBC Softball team fell to visiting Albany, 4-0 on Senior day in Baltimore. The game was the final home appearance for DeLany and five classmates: Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va.), Carly Lesko (New Milford, N.J.), Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J.), Toni Santonastasso (Canonsburg, Pa.) and Erin Trnka (Goffstown, N.H.).
Fresh off of yesterday's complete game shutout victory, Brianna Baker (Waldorf, Md.) pitched six strong innings of relief, allowing just two runs on four hits. Albany (21-13, 9-4) led 2-0 just two batters into the game after a two-run homerun. Baker would enter in the second and keep the Great Danes mostly in-check until UMBC (9-28, 4-9) picked up it's first hit of the game on a Valerie Hammett (Mechanicsville, Md.) two-out single up the middle in the fifth.
The Retrievers would get the first to batters of the fifth on after Imani Dawson (Hanover, Md.) would lead off the frame with a single followed by a DeLany hit-by-pitch. However, the next three batters would go down in order to end the threat. Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.) and DeLany each added one-out hits in the sixth and seventh, respectively, but neither would move another base.
The Retrievers travel to Long Island for a critical single game at Stony Brook on Wednesday. The two teams split a doubleheader in Baltimore last week.
