Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC softball team hosts Stony Brook for a mid-week double header on Wednesday afternoon, with the first game beginning at 1 p.m.
UMBC (7-23, 2-4) is coming off a three-game set against Binghamton last weekend, in which they split a double header on Saturday, winning the second game, and dropping the rubber match on Sunday. In the Retrievers' 8-6 victory, freshmen Imani Dawson (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough) and Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown), and sophomore Valerie Hammett (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) each drove in two runs to lead the offense.
On the season, Hammett is hitting a team-best .343 with five doubles, seven walks, and has driven in 10 runs. Dawson has a team-best four homeruns and has driven in 11 runs. Sophomore Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz./Boulder Creek) has 27 hits on the year.
In the circle, senior Kim Puccio sports a 3.77 ERA and has tossed nine complete games on 20 games started. The senior has also struck out 52 batters on the year.
Scouting the Seawolves:
Stony Brook (12-13, 1-2) enters Wednesday coming off a 3-1 week, including a double header sweep at Manhattan last Thursday. The Seawolves also split a double header against Sacred Heart on Sunday.
Stony Brook is led by sophomore Melissa Rahrich, both at the plate and in the circle. On offense, she leads the team with a .371 batting average, 26 hits, and 12 walks. In the circle, she has a 4.29 ERA with 56 strikeouts. She has also tossed eight complete games, including two shutouts. Rahrich has also been named America East Pitcher of the Week three times this season.
Fellow sophomore Taylor Pechin has a team-best five homeruns and sports a .295 batting average.
