Six Different Retrievers Drive in a Run, but Fall to Drexel on Sunday Afternoon

Baltimore, Md. -- Six different UMBC players drove in one run but the team's early-season struggles continued Sunday as Drexel handed the Retrievers a 10-8 loss in the final game of the Hampton Inn BWI UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational.

UMBC fell to 2-17 with the loss and dropped all four games of the Invitational over the weekend.

The Retrievers got plenty of offense. They finished with eight hits and drove in six runs but Drexel scored in all seven innings, and that proved to be too much.

UMBC got three runs in the second and then one in the fifth plus two more each in the sixth and the seventh.

Imani Dawson (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough), Valerie Hammett (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon), Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge), Haley DeLany (Lederach, Pa./Souderton Area), Tori Santonastasso (Canonsburg, Pa./Pope John XXIII Regional) and Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md/Huntingtown) each drove in one run.

Alexander led the way with a 2-for-4 effort, and everyone else had one hit. Carly Lesko (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) also helped with a steal of home.

DeLany tied the game in the second inning with a homer; that locked things up at 3-3. But Drexel then twice pushed the lead to four, including 10-6 in the seventh before Hammett got an RBI single and Alexander drove in a run with a groundout.

Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) started and went two innings but Hammett got the loss after giving up two runs in one inning.

The Retrievers go back into action Wednesday with a road game with George Washington at 3 p.m. in Washington.
