Lafayette, La. – Freshman Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md.) went 3-for-4 with an RBI, but the UMBC Softball team couldn't hold a 3-0 7th inning lead and fell to Southeastern Louisiana, 4-3, in 9 innings. The Retrievers dropped the afternoon game, 6-0, to Memphis on the first day of the 32nd Annual Louisiana Classics.
Defending America East Player of the Week Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz.) started the game with a triple and scored on Keffler's single down the left field line. The UMBC (1-6) lead was extended to 2-0 a few batters later when Carly Lesko (New Milford, N.J.) hit a sacrifice fly to score Erin Trnka (Goffstown, NH). Lesko would put the Retrievers up 3-0 in the seventh when she scored on a Toni Santonastasso (Canonsburg, Pa.) two-out RBI single.
Southeastern Louisiana (8-3) would answer in the bottom half with three unearned runs after two UMBC errors to send the game to extras. The Lions would walk-off after a two out RBI single in the ninth.
Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J.) took the tough luck loss, going 8.2 innings allowing just one earned run, six hits and striking out two.
Trnka walked and Anna Lonchar (Bristow, Va) was hit by a pitch, and they were the only Retrievers to reach base as Memphis (5-4) pitcher Molly Smith threw a no-hitter.
UMBC has a rematch with Southeastern Louisiana at 5:30 tomorrow, followed immediately by a game against #15/#17 Louisiana.
