The UMBC softball team continues their season as they travel to Louisiana to participate in the 32nd Annual Louisiana Classics this weekend, starting on Friday, February 23rd.
UMBC (1-4) will start the tournament by playing a doubleheader on Friday against Southeastern Louisiana and Memphis, with first pitch at 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM, respectively. They will then play in another doubleheader Saturday against Southeastern Louisiana again at 5:30 PM and against the host of the tournament at 8:00 PM, the 15th/17th rank team in the nation Louisiana. They will then finish up the tournament with a single game on Sunday against North Florida at 10:00 AM.
The Retrievers are lead by sophomore shortstop Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz./Boulder Creek), who just was awarded America East Player of the Week after hitting .500 (8-16) with a double, triple, and five runs scored in last weekend's Pirate Clash. Freshman second baseman Julia Keffler (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) was named America East Rookie of the Week as well, after hitting .308 with a .413 on-base percentage in the tournament.
Senior pitcher Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) leads the Retrievers in the circle, throwing 12.2 innings, with five strikeouts and an ERA of 5.53.
Scouting the Lions:
Southeastern Louisiana (7-2) is coming off a 3-2 loss to Mississippi State on Tuesday, February 20. It is just the second time they have scored less than four runs in a game this season, as they are averaging 6.67 runs a game so far this season. They are being led offensively by Mahalia Gibson, who is leading the team in batting average (.448), hits (13), home runs (three), and RBI (16). In the circle, the Lions are lead by Rachel Hayes and Lacey Hill. Hayes has a team best 26.2 innings pitched and 1.57 ERA, while Hill has a team high three wins.
Scouting the Tigers:
Memphis (4-4) is returning to Louisiana after participating in the Northwestern State Tournament in Natchitoches, Louisiana. They dropped three of the four games they played in during the tournament. Offensively, they are lead by Baylee Smith, who is hitting a team high .429. Brooke Lee produces the power, leading the team with two home runs and eight RBI. Molly Smith holds down the pitching staff with a 0.58 ERA to go along with a 2-1 record and team high 24.1 innings pitched.
Scouting the Ragin' Cajuns:
The 15th/17th ranked team in the nation Louisiana (7-2) is coming off playing a three game series with #2 Florida this past weekend. They dropped the doubleheader on February 17, before defeating the Gators in 11 innings on February 18 by a score of 4-3. Alissa Dalton is leading the charge at the plate for Louisiana, leading the team with an average of .455, a home run, and 10 RBI. Pitching wise, Kylee Jo Trahan leads the staff with a 1.07 ERA, while tied with Summer Ellyson with a team high three wins. Ellyson also leads the staff in innings pitched with 24.2.
Scouting the Ospreys:
North Florida (6-6) is coming off a 6-0 loss to McNeese State on February 21. The Ospreys are lead at the plate by Navia Penrod, who is hitting .474 with six RBI and 18 hits. Dominica Cocuzza brings the power with six doubles and five RBI. In the circle, Sydney Matzko leads the team in ERA and innings pitched with 1.79 and 43.0, respectively. There is a three way tie for the team lead in wins with two that is shared by Matzko, Morgan Blourne, and Amanda Blanchard.
