Lowell, Mass.-- Senior Kelly Lane collected two-hits and pitched well in relief, but host UMass Lowell (21-19, 12-5) held off a late rally and ended it's season with a 9-4 win over UMBC (19-27, 3-10) on Sunday.
After UMBC went scoreless in the top of the first, the River Hawks got a two-run homer just three batters into their half of the inning. After an error helped extend the inning, a grand slam and a solo homer put UML up 7-0 after one. UML then added a solo shot in the second to go up 8-0.
The Retrievers loaded the bases with none out in the fourth after Lane led off with her second hit of the game, and seniors Jaclyn Buckley (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Camden Regional) and Kinsey Shifflett (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) followed with walks. After the next two batters were retired, Lane and Buckley scored on a wild pitch and error by the catcher on the same play to cut the deficit to 8-2.
Carly Lesko (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) started a rally in the fifth with a lead-off double. That was followed by a walk to Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) and an RBI double by Toni Santonastasso (Canonsburg, Pa./Pope John XXIII Regional) and a Lane sacrifice fly to halve the UML lead to 8-4.
The River Hawks added a solo homer in the sixth to account for the final score of 9-4.
Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) also collected a hit for the Retrievers.
