Lowell, Mass.-- Junior Carly Lesko (New Milford, N.J./ New Milford) hit a two-run homer and Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) collected two hits, but the UMBC Softball Team (19-26, 3-9) dropped both games of a double-header at UMass Lowell (20-19, 11-5).
The River Hawks jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the 1st, but that would be all the offense for either team until Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) smashed a leadoff double to right center in the fifth for the Retrievers first hit. She would move third and eventually score on a Jaclyn Buckley (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Camden Regional) groundout to cut the deficit to 2-1. UML, however, would quickly respond with two in the bottom half of the inning to make it 4-1, which would be the final.
Alexander, Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz./Boulder Creek) and Lesko all collected hits for UMBC.
Alexander started off the game with a bunt single, stole second and scored on Lesko's team-best seventh homer of the season, to put UMBC up 2-0. The River Hawks would answer right back in the bottom half, plating 3 runs to take a 3-2 lead after the first.
It would remain 3-2 until UML got a two-run homer in the fourth, followed by another run in the fifth to extend the advantage to 6-2, which was the final score.
The Retrievers managed just three hits, and only one after the first inning, in a Kelly Lane (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) fourth inning single. The final game of the series will be played at noon on Sunday.
