The UMBC Softball Team hits the road for the final time in conference play when it travels to Massachusetts to take on UMass Lowell this weekend for a three-game set.
The Retrievers (19-24, 3-7 America East) are currently on a three-game losing streak, dropping the final game to Albany two weeks ago and both games to Maine last weekend.
Over the weekend, UMBC was led at the plate by juniors Carly Lesko (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) and Haley DeLany (Lederach, Pa./Souderton Area). Lesko provided a solo homerun in the first game, while DeLany drove in a run in the second game with a single.
Senior Nicole Casagrand (Melbourne, Fla./Hatboro-Horsham) led the team in the circle over the weekend, tossing 8.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) off seven hits and striking out three. The senior went three shutout innings in relief in game one, allowing just one hit.
For the season, the Retrievers are continued to be led by freshman Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz./Boulder Creek), juniors Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior) and Lesko, and senior Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional). Daigneau leads the team in hits (53), average (.390), on-base percentage (.447), triples (5), and stolen bases (13), while Alexander leads the team in doubles with 10. Jackson leads the team in RBI with 22, and shares the team lead in homeruns with Lesko at six each.
The Retrievers continue to lead the America East in pitching with a team ERA of 3.45. They are led by junior Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) with a 9-8 record and a 2.33 ERA and senior Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee) with a 3.58 ERA and a team high six complete games.
Scouting the River Hawks
UMass Lowell (18-18, 9-4 AE) currently sits in third in the America East and are coming off a series victory last weekend at Stony Brook by splitting a double header and then taking the rubber match the next day.
The conference's top hitting team is led at the plate by Courtney Cashman, who leads the team in hits (51), average (.418), doubles (10), and is tied for the lead in RBI with 28. She has led the team in conference play as well, sporting team highs with a .478 average, 22 hits, 13 runs scored, and 15 RBI.
Kaysee Talcik leads the River Hawks in the circle with a 3.90 ERA, 11 complete games, 74 strikeouts, and a .264 batting average against.
The Retrievers currently lead the overall series against the River Hawks 7-1, and are 3-0 at UMass Lowell.
The two teams play a double header on Saturday beginning at 1:00 PM, and will play the third game on Sunday at 12:00 PM.
