UMBC Drops Series Finale to Maine on Saturday

Baltimore, Md. – Five different players got a hit, but the UMBC softball team (19-23, 3-7 America East) fell to first-place Maine (14-18, 9-1 AE), 7-1, on Saturday afternoon through heavy rain in Baltimore. A scheduled doubleheader turned into a single game after the second game was cancelled due to weather.

Maine broke the game open with three runs in the first, and added a run a piece in the second and third innings to go up 5-0 after three. The Retrievers' arms would tame the Black Bears' bats for the next three innings, until Maine tacked on another two runs in the seventh to go up 7-0.

UMBC wouldn't go down quietly in the seventh, as Jaclyn Buckley (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Camden Regional) would get on with a fielder's choice. A Kinsey Shifflett (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) single would send her to third, and Haley DeLany (Lederach, Pa./Souderton Area) would single Buckley in after the pitching change to get the Retrievers on the board, making it a 7-1 game. That would be all they would score; however, as the game would end 7-1 in favor of Maine.

DeLany would lead the offense, going 1-for-3 with the only RBI on the day.

Up next for the Retrievers is a trip up to UMass Lowell on Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 pm, while the single game on Sunday is scheduled for a noon start.
