Albany, N.Y. – Toni Santonastasso (Canonsburg, Pa./Pope John XXIII Regional) drove in two runs, but the UMBC Softball Team's (19-22, 3-5 America East) dropped its rubber match, 7-3, at Albany (18-14, 3-7 AE).
The junior drove in two runs on a three-for-four day at the plate.
With wind gusts reaching 20 mph, the Retrievers had some bad luck, surrendering five runs in the first two innings. However, they fought back in the third, plating three runs, including two off a single to center field by Santonastasso to score junior Carly Lesko (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) and senior Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional).
The Great Danes would respond with a single run in both the third and fourth innings.
Senior Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee) tossed 4.1 innings in relief, allowing two runs (one earned) while striking out two.
Santonastasso joined classmates Lesko and Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior) and freshman Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz./Boulder Creek) as these Retrievers all provided a three hit game this weekend.
The Retrievers will return home next weekend to take on the Maine Black Bears in a three game set, with a single game on Friday at 3 PM and a double header on Saturday beginning at 11 AM.
