Softball Hits the Road for First Time in 13 Games, Travels to Stony Brook for Three-Game Set

The UMBC Softball Team (14-19, 0-2 America East) will play their first road games in a month this weekend when they travel to Stony Brook to take on the Seawolves (6-16, 2-0 AE) in a three-game set this weekend.

The Retrievers were stymied offensively by a strong pitching performance by Morgan State on Wednesday when they lost, 3-1, ending their home stand with an 8-5 record.

Freshman Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz./Boulder Creek) continues to lead the team in average (.459), hits (45), triples (5), and stolen bases (12). Her average was good enough for tenth best in the country, and best by any freshman in the nation, entering the week.  Other offensive leaders for the Retrievers are senior Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) with a team-leading four home runs and 18 RBI and junior Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior), who paces the squad in doubles with nine, and is second in hits with 40 and RBI with 17.

In the circle, UMBC is led by  Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J./Sparta).  She is currently sporting a 2.57 ERA in 65.1 innings pitched.  The junior  owns  a 5-6 record and two saves.

Scouting the Seawolves:

Stony Brook is riding a three-game winning streak as they prepare to host UMBC this weekend. They swept a double-header on Sunday in their America East opener on the road in Albany by scores of 5-2 and 7-5.  They also defeated LIU Brooklyn by a score of 9-1 on Wednesday.

At the plate, the Seawolves are led by Jourdin Hering and Melissa Rahrich.  Hering currently leads the team in average (.347), hits (25), runs scored (15), and is tied for the lead in doubles (4). Rahrich holds the team lead in home runs and RBI with five and 18 respectively, and is second to Hering in average with a .345 mark and in hits with 19.

The Seawolves are led in the circle by Rahrich and Lindsay Hughes.  Rahrich has a record of 3-6, an ERA of 5.56, and has tossed two complete games.  Hughes has a 2-0 record, an ERA of 3.96, and has one complete-game shutout.  She has only started two games out of the 13 appearances.

The two teams will play a double-header on Saturday with the first game starting at 1:00 PM, and will play a third game Sunday afternoon at 12:00 PM.

Stony Brook leads the all-time series 30-14. UMBC took the first game last season, 6-3, at home. However, the Retrievers then dropped four straight to the Seawolves, including two close losses (3-1, 5-2) in the America East Tournament.
