Baltimore, MD – Visiting Morgan State (14-11) scored two first inning runs and never looked back, as it defeated UMBC (14-19) on Wednesday afternoon.
Lane pitched three innings, allowing three runs off four hits and three walks, but worked out of multiple jams to limit the Bears to just three runs. Holte would relieve her in the fourth inning and toss four perfect innings, while striking out two batters.
The game got off to a fast start with Morgan State driving in two runs in the first inning, but Lane pitched out of a jam to hold the Bears to just two, inducing two pop outs and a groundout. The Retrievers would answer back with one run of their own in the bottom half of the inning after freshman Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz./Boulder Creek) walked to lead off, and came around to score on a heads up play after a throwing error from the catcher.
Morgan State would get the run back in the top of the second off an RBI double. The Retrievers would threaten in the bottom of the third, but would not cash in after Lane was pinch ran for after being injured on the base path.
Holte would come in for Lane after the injury and shut down the Bears for the rest of the game.
The Retrievers will travel to Stony Brook this weekend for a three game set, with a double header on Saturday and one game on Sunday.
