Hot-Hitting Binghamton Takes Two From Softball on Sunday

Baltimore, MD – The UMBC Softball Team (14-18, 0-2) dropped both games of a doubleheader to defending regular season champion Binghamton (9-14, 2-0) in both teams' America East opener on Sunday.

The Retrievers were led in the games by junior Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior), freshman Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz./Boulder Creek), junior Carly Lesko (New Milford, N.J./New Milford), and senior Jaclyn Buckley (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Camden Regional).  Alexander and Daigneau were responsible for driving in two runs each in the first game, and Lesko and Buckley drove in two and one runs respectively in game two.

Game 1:

The Bearcats got off to a quick start in the top half of the inning with two runs, but the Retrievers would respond with one of their own with Daigneau scoring off a wild pitch two batters after walking to begin the inning.

The Retrievers would go into the sixth inning down 8-1, where they put together a rally.  Daigneau laced a bases loaded double to drive in two runs, and Alexander followed that up with a two-run double of her own.

Junior Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) provided 4.1 innings of relief, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out two.

Game 2:

The game began scoreless through the first two innings until the Bearcats combined for seven runs in the third and fourth innings.  The Retrievers would fight back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth off a Lesko homer to center field.  They would add on a third run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double to right center by Buckley.

The Bearcats would add three runs in the top of the seventh.

Senior Kelly Lane (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) provided three innings of relief, allowing three runs on five hits.

The Retrievers will look to bounce back as they host Morgan State for one game on Wednesday at 2 PM at UMBC Softball Stadium.
