Softball Hosts Defending Regular Season Champion Binghamton to Open America East Play

Baltimore, MD – The UMBC Softball team (14-16) will begin America East Play this weekend when it hosts defending regular season champion Binghamton in a three game series starting on Saturday.

The Retrievers are coming off a successful 5-1 weekend in which senior outfielder/pitcher Kelly Lane (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) was named America East Player of the Week and senior Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) was named College Sports Madness America East Player of the Week.  Lane went 12-for-22, drove in five runs, hit two homeruns, recorded her first win of the season, and recorded her 100th career hit.  Jackson hit .294, scored five runs, hit a homerun, and drove in eight runs, including her 100th career RBI.

UMBC received other big performances this weekend from freshman Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz. Boulder Creek) going 10-for-21 with five runs scored and two RBI, junior Carly Lesko (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) who hit two homeruns and drove in three runs, junior Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior) who recorded a hit in the final four games of the weekend, and contributed a four RBI game against Siena.  Junior Haley DeLaney (Lederach, Pa./Souderton Area) also hit her first career homerun against Robert Morris.   

In the circle, the Retrievers received strong outings by senior Kim Puccio (5-5) who pitched 15.2 innings over the weekend, allowing five runs, three earned, and striking out nine.  Puccio recorded her first two saves of the season against Coppin State.  Senior Jessica Holte (4-5) threw her third shutout of the season against Robert Morris.

Scouting the Bearcats:

The Binghamton Bearcats (7-12) play a double-header against Marist on Thursday before coming to Baltimore.  They are led at the plate by Jessica Rutherford and Kate Richard.  Rutherford leads the team in hitting, runs scored, hits, and on base percentage with a .379 average, 13 runs scored, 22 hits, and a .438 OBP.  Richard sports a .333 average and leads the team in homeruns, RBI, and slugging percentage.  She has five homeruns, 22 RBI, and a .784 slugging percentage.  She is also tied for the team lead in triples with Bridget Hunt with three each.

The Bearcats' leader in the circle is Ryan Gibson.  She has a 3.78 ERA and a 5-4 record.  She has pitched 53.2 innings, including four complete games.  She has also struck out 32 batters this season.  Rozlyn Price is the Bearcats' second most used pitcher, throwing 41.2 innings with a 5.54 ERA.  She has recorded 2-6 record with two complete games, and has struck out 17 batters.

The Retrievers and Bearcats will face off twice on Saturday with a double-header beginning at 1 PM, and will finish off the set Sunday afternoon at 12 PM.
