Softball Welcomes Coppin State Thursday, Robert Morris and Siena This Weekend

Baltimore, MD – The UMBC Softball team returns to action after a 10 days hiatus looking to continue their three-game win streak. The Retrievers will host three different opponents after the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational was postponed due to weather last weekend.

UMBC (9-15) will begin their slate of games with a doubleheader against the Coppin State Eagles on Thursday with the first pitch of game one scheduled for 12 PM.  The Retrievers will have a day off, then play a pair of games against the Robert Morris Colonials and the Siena Saints, with a game against each on Saturday and Sunday afternoon.

UMBC is riding a three-game win streak from two weekends ago, beating Maryland Eastern Shore 5-0 on Saturday, and sweeping Rider 15-0 and 11-7 on Sunday.  The Retrievers were led at the plate by freshman Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz./Boulder Creek) and junior Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior).  Daigneau is coming off a 15-for-18 weekend, including six RBI, two doubles, a triple, and her first career homer. Alexander went 8-for-14 over the weekend, including five RBIs, a double, and her second homer of the season. Daigneau leads the team in batting average (.493), hits (33), doubles (6), triples (5), and stolen bases (10).  Senior pitcher Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee) tossed a shutout against Rider, allowing just three hits while striking out five. Junior Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) sported a .70 ERA in the weekend's games.  Puccio leads the team in ERA on the season at 2.44.

Scouting the Eagles

The Eagles (2-16) are currently on a four-game skid, including two losses to UMBC's last opponent Rider.  Cayla Brown leads the Eagles at the plate, with a .333 average, which includes a team high four doubles.  Megan Narvaez has the only homerun for the Eagles, and leads the team in hits with 13.  In the circle, Madison Didion has been the Eagles' workhorse, pitching 45.2 innings out of the 89.2 played.  Didion has accounted for both the Eagles' victories this season.

Scouting the Colonials

Robert Morris (5-16) has been off since March 12th due to postponed games over the last week.  Their latest action came in the Holy City Showdown in Charleston, S.C. where they went 2-3, including wins over America East member UMass Lowell and Northern Kentucky.  The losses came against Chattanooga, College of Charleston, and North Carolina.  The Colonials have one prior meeting against Siena, which they won 8-0 in Madeira Beach, Florida.  They are led at the plate by Jordan Gurganus and Olivia Lorusso.  Gurganus has a team-high average of .455 and in stolen bases with six.  Lorusso is tied in the team lead for homers at three and leads the team in RBIs with 14.  The Colonials are led in pitching by Laura Coulter and Madison Riggle, who account for two and three wins respectively.  Riggle has four complete games while Coulter has three.  Kaitlyn Ellzy sports the team's lowest ERA at 1.40, but has pitched just 10 innings due to missing the first 14 games of the season with an injury.

Scouting the Saints

Siena (1-14) is coming off a 1-3 showing in the UNCW Tournament two weekends ago, which they dropped two games to Youngstown State and one to Hampton University, and edged out host UNC Wilmington for their first victory of the season.  The Saints are led offensively by Chelsey Drew, Madysen Cossack, and Loryn DeFalco.  Drew and Cossack share the team lead in hits with 13.
