Boston, Mass. -- Following a sensation first week to her career, freshman shortstop Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz./Boulder Creek) was named America East Player and Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday morning. In addition, senior Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee) was named Pitcher of the Week by the conference, and sophomore Morgan Peyou (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) was named College Sports Madness America East Player of the Week.
After missing the first weekend of the season due to injury, Daigneau burst onto the scene this past weekend, hitting .471 in six games, going 8-for-17 witha .500 on base percentage. She also hit a pair of doubles and two triples for an .824 slugging percentage, stole three bases and scored a pair of runs, including the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over Appalachian State. In the field, she played errorless shortstop, converting all 15 attempts.
Holte was masterful in the circle, striking out seven, walking none and allowing only four hits in a complete game shutout of Appalachian State.
Peyou batted .438 for the weekend, with at least one hit in every game, and two RBI. The sophomore added a triple, three walks, two stolen bases and two runs scored.The Retrievers will play in their final out-of-town tournament this weekend when they travel to UNC Wilmington for five games. UMBC will start the tournament with familiar foe Appalachian State on Friday at 10 a.m., followed by a 12:30 pm.m. matchup with the host Seahawks.
