Jackson Records 100th Career Hit as Offense Explodes in Softball’s Sweep of Coppin State

Baltimore, Md. – Junior third baseman Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) had three base hits, including the 100th of her career, and drove in and scored three runs as the UMBC Softball team swept local rival Coppin State on Tuesday afternoon at UMBC Softball Stadium. The Retrievers took game one 8-5 before winning game two, 10-2, in five innings.

Game 1

UMBC (15-16, 1-2 AE) would take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when senior catcher Jordan Sganga (Edgewater, Md./South River) singled home senior pitcher Kelly Lane (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) with two outs. Coppin State (2-18, 2-1 MEAC) would answer with two off Lane in the top of the third, but the Retrievers would immediately respond with five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Sophomore Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior) would draw a one-out walk and score on a Bridget O'Malley (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough) double to tie the game at two. Danielle O'Neill (Lothian, Md./Southern) would give UMBC a 3-2 lead with an RBI fielder's choice, and Lane would follow with an RBI single to make it 4-2. Sophomore Toni Santonastasso IGalena, Ohio/Pope John XXIII Regional) and freshman Morgan Peyou (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) would each add in RBI singles before the inning ended to give UMBC a 6-2 lead.

The Eagles would rally, and eventually cut the deficit to 6-5 on a couple of home runs and a wild pitch, but Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee), appearing in relief, would strand the tying run at third in the sixth. Lane would provide some insurance with a two RBI single in the bottom of half of the inning to push the advantage back to three, and Holte would shut the door in the seventh to pick up her first save of the season.

Lane went five innings allowing four runs, all earned, on seven hits, while striking two to improve to 3-4 on the season. Holte allowed one run on two hits in two innings for the save.

Game 2

UMBC took an early lead as Jackson would pick up her 100th hit on an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning that scored Alexander and give the Retrievers a 1-0 advantage. Junior second baseman Jaclyn Buckley (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Camden Regional)  would make it a two-run lead in the bottom of the second with an RBI double that scored junior catcher Kinsey Shifflett (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) from first base.

Coppin State would respond with two unearned runs in the top of the third to tie the game at two, but UMBC would explode for eight runs in the bottom half of the inning to put the game out of reach. Alexander started the inning with a double, moved to third on a single from O'Malley, and scored on an RBI single off the bat of Jackson to help the Retrievers regain the lead at 3-2. O'Neill would double the advantage with a sacrifice fly, and sophomore first baseman Carly Lesko (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) would blow the game open with a first pitch three-run homer to right field. O'Malley and Jackson would both pick up an RBI on bases loaded walks later in the inning before an error allowed the tenth run to score.

Nicole Casagrand (Melbourne, Fla./Hatboro-Horsham) picked up her first win of the season (1-3), in the five inning effort. She allowed two hits, the two unearned runs and struck out two in the victory.

UMBC is back in action tomorrow, Wednesday, March 30 when they host the Brown Bears for a double-header beginning at 2 p.m.
