Softball Drops Series Finale to Stony Brook

Baltimore, Md. -- UMBC's first two batters of the game singled but the Retrievers could not do much else on offense as Stony Brook scored a 7-0 victory in an America East game on Saturday.

Center fielder Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va/Woodbridge Senior) and left fielder Morgan Peyou (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) started the bottom of the first with singles against Stony Brook (10-15-1, 2-1) starter Jane Sallen, and the Retrievers later had runners on second and third with one out but stranded both.

That was the last time UMBC (13-16, 1-3) put runners in scoring position as it finished with just four hits as Sallen (7-10) went the distance. Shortstop Bridget O'Malley (Baltimore, Md/Seton Keough) and right fielder Kelly Lane (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) got the other two hits, both singles.

Starter Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va/Atlee) took the loss as she lasted five innings, giving up five runs on six hits in falling to 7-6 on the year. Lane came on after that and allowed two runs in the final two frames. The Seawolves took a 1-0 lead in the first and wound up scoring in five of the seven innings.

UMBC returns to action on Tuesday, March 29, whent it hosts local rival Coppin State in a single game at 2 p.m. The Retrievers will then host Brown for a doubleheader the following day, also at 2 p.m.
