Schedule Change: Softball to Host UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational Beginning Friday

Baltimore, Md.--  After going 2-1 in mid-week action, the UMBC Softball team will play host to the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational this Friday through Sunday.

The tournament schedule has been revised due to Lafayette no longer being able to attend since the college has suspended all athletics through the weekend because of a stomach virus outbreak on campus.

UMBC (7-12) is led offensively by freshman left fielder Morgan Peyou (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island), who has team bests in average (.429) and on-base percentage (.491). Sophomore first baseman Carly Lesko (New Milford,N.J./New Milford) is the top slugger in the Retriever lineup with a team-leading seven home runs (tied for ninth-most in a sophomore season) and 21 RBI to go with a team-high .745 slugging percentage. Junior third baseman Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) is the defending America East Player of the Week and is batting .358 with four homers and 20 runs driven in.  Senior shortstop Bridget O'Malley (Baltimore,Md./Seton Keough) has also been a catalyst for the offense, batting .407 with 12 RBI out of the second spot in the lineup.

Scouting the Bears (2-12)

Morgan State will make the short trip to UMBC having dropped its last six games. The Bears two wins this season came in Florida; a 4-2 win over Akron and 6-2 victory over Bryant. 

Audriana Alvarez started the season as the top hitter for Morgan State, batting .643 in her first six appearances.

Scouting the Red Foxes (7-3)

Marist went 3-2 last weekend at the George Mason Tournament, splitting with Army West Point and sweeping Howard, while falling to the hosts, 5-4. The Red Foxes also have a 3-2 victory over BIG EAST member Providence on their résumé.
Senior third baseman Maureen Duddy leads Marist in average (.389), runs (eight), hits (14) and stolen bases (ten). The Red Foxes have a solid pitching staff, with five hurlers all making two starts each and combining for a 2.33 ERA. Freshman Megan Beiermeister and red-shirt junior Jessica Van Alphen have three wins apiece, with the freshman pitching to an 0.64 ERA in three appearances and Van Alphen adding a save.
Scouting the Mount (0-14)

Mount St. Mary's spent nine consecutive days out west to begin the season; playing in a tournament at Arizona State, road double-headers at New Mexico State and UTEP, and finishing up with a five game tournament at the University of Arizona.

Junior Rachel Heinze  has accounted for all four Mount homers this season and has driven in ten of the the team's 35 runs. Marian Ruf has started four games and is 0-5 with a 19..57 ERA and is tied for the team lead in strikeouts with 13. Katie Olson shares the strikeout lead and has eight appearances and has pitched the most innings on the staff (21.1)
 
Scouting the Eagles (0-5)

Coppin State traveled to UMBC earlier this week and dropped a 6-1 decision to the hosts. Shortstop Danielle Smith went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a double, while outfielder Alanna Williams went 2-for3. Dakota Gatrell pitched five innings in the loss, allowing nine hits and six runs, all earned, while striking out one and walking one.
