The UMBC Softball team will return to the friendly confines of UMBC Softball Stadium for the first time in almost ten months when they host Fairleigh Dickinson in a doubleheader Sunday at 1 pm. Due to the inclement weather Thursday night, the games scheduled for Saturday have been canceled. UMBC and Coppin State have also agreed to play a singled game on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at UMBC Softball Stadium.
The Retrievers (4-10) are led offensively by freshman Morgan Peyou (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) who is batting a team-best .444, and also leads the team in hits (16) and on-base percentage (.500). The left fielder is also tied for the team lead in stolen bases (five) and is second in runs scored (12). Sophomore first baseman Carly Lesko (New Milford, N.J./New Milford) is the top slugger for the Dawgs, with team-bests in home runs (four) and RBI (15).
Junior Kelly Lane (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) paces the UMBC pitching staff with two wins and a 5.00 ERA. Classmate Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./ Atlee) was named America East Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday after a weekend complete-game shutout against Lafayette.
Scouting the Knights (0-4)
Fairleigh Dickinson opened the 2016 season at the Elon Phoenix Tournament down in North Carolina, where they fell to North Carolina A&T once (12-5) and the hosts three times (6-0, 5-1, 9-4). Freshman third baseman Kellie Natham comes in batting .333 and has team-highs in RBI (three), slugging percentage (.417) as well as putouts (12) in the field.
The Knights have had four different pitchers make a start so far, but senior Loren Stavrou pitched a complete game to go with her team-low 4.00 ERA in two appearances. The Long Beach, California native also has struck out a team-best four opponents and has the lowest batting average against (.250)
