BALTIMORE – UMBC softball hits the road for non-conference action on Tuesday, April 21 when the Retrievers battle Mount St. Mary's in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. at Meadows Field.
SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS (20-17):
UMBC split its six non-conference games last week, but dropped two against Lehigh in their latest matchups. The Retrievers led in both contests on Senior Day against the Mountain Hawks, but were unable to hold on for victory. Senior pitcher Miranda Clark put forth an impressive performance in the 10-inning finale, striking out eight batters and allowing just one run through the first nine innings of play.
Senior Taylor Hall is coming of a monumental week, becoming the 10th player in program history to record 200 hits with the program and further climbing the record books in doubles, extra-base hits and RBI. Freshman Tori Alexander paces the Retrievers' offense that is batting .305 as a team. Alexander is hitting .420 for the season with eight extra-base hits, 22 runs batted in and 18 stolen bases. Hall, the team leader in on-base percentage, has blasted a team-best six home runs on the year and has a team-best 34 runs batted in. Freshman Emily Neal and sophomore Kaelin Jackson round out the group of Retrievers batting over .300 for the season, hitting .382 and .308, respectively.
UMBC's pitching staff is posting a combined 3.51 ERA for the season, led by a 2.04 ERA and a 12-7 record from Jessica Holte. The sophomore moved into a tie for eighth on the Retrievers' all-time wins list with a pair of victories last week. Clark has posted a 2-2 record and is holding batters to a .159 batting average. Freshman Kim Puccio has added four wins and ranks second on the team in strikeouts (45).
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS (6-26):
Mount St. Mary's has dropped nine in a row, including Saturday's Northeast Conference doubleheader to Fairleigh Dickinson. The Mount is batting .244 as a team led by freshman Niki Gonzalez, who is the only player hitting above .300. The rookie ranks second on the team in extra-base hits (nine) and RBI (16). Classmate Morgan Alisauckas has a team-best six home runs and 18 runs batted in.
In the circle, freshman Marian Ruf has posted a team-best 5.29 ERA with a 2-13 record. The rookie has tossed 12 complete games and has struck out 53 batters. Senior Danni Cummings has a 3-8 record with a 7.70 ERA.
