BALTIMORE – UMBC softball steps out of America East play for a doubleheader at La Salle on Wednesday, April 15. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. at West Campus Field.
SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS (17-14):
UMBC has posted a 4-2 record in its current eight-game road swing, to help the Retrievers get off to their best start to an America East schedule since joining the league (7-2). UMBC dropped two of three games in a tough series over the weekend to Albany, but picked up its first win on the Great Danes' home field since 2009.
UMBC's offense has got contribution all over the place, with freshman Tori Alexander ranking second in the league in batting average (.424) and senior Taylor Hall ranking 29th in the nation in on-base percentage (.547). Hall and sophomore Kaelin Jackson have each recorded 10 extra base hits on the season and have posted 24 and 20 RBI, respectively.
In the circle, sophomore Jessica Holte ranks fifth in the country in walks allowed per seven innings (0.71) and leads the team with a 1.95 ERA and a 10-6 record. Holte has won nine of her last 10 starts and allowed eight earned runs during the span. Freshman Kim Puccio has posted a 3-3 record in her nine starts and has posted 37 strikeouts.
SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS (9-8):
La Salle has won five in a row heading into the week, including a three-game sweep of Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island over the weekend. The Explorers travel to Villanova on Tuesday, before hosting the Retrievers on Wednesday.
Sophomore Christina Bascara leads the team in batting average (.486) and was named this week's Atlantic 10 Player of the Week. The third baseman has driven in a team-best 16 runs on the season and has seven extra-base hits for a .914 slugging percentage. Valerie Pineiro leads the team with five home runs and ranks second with 14 RBI.
In the circle, Mary Cate Scott is the only Explorer with a winning record at 4-2. She leads the team with a 2.29 ERA in 36.2 innings of work and is holding batters to a .245 batting average.
UP NEXT FOR THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC returns home for a pair of non-conference doubleheaders at UMBC Softball Stadium over the weekend, beginning with a matchup against South Carolina State on Friday, April 17. The Retrievers will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, April 18 with a battle against Lehigh.
