UMBC Softball Hosts Maine in America East Opening Series

BALTIMORE – UMBC softball opens its America East slate with a three-game series against Maine over the weekend. Due to expected precipitation in the Baltimore area on Friday, the series with begin with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, March 21. The series will conclude with a single game at noon on Sunday at the UMBC Softball Stadium.

SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS (8-11, 0-0 AE): The Retrievers have won eight of their last 11 contests heading into conference play, including six of eight games on their home field. UMBC split Wednesday's doubleheader with Lafayette, despite sophomore Jessica Holte and freshman Kim Puccio combining to allow just one earned run in 14 innings of play and striking out 13 batters.

Offensively, freshman Tori Alexander has posted a team-best .412 batting average on the season and is in the midst of a seven-game hit streak. Senior Kaelin Jackson and senior Taylor Hall have combined for 12 extra-base hits and 21 runs batted in. Hall leads the team in walks (13) and on-base percentage (.508), while Jackson's .574 slugging percentage is a team-best.

In the circle, UMBC's pitching staff has posted a 1.75 ERA at home, holding opponents to a .214 batting average. Senior Miranda Clark has registered a 2-0 record in her five appearances and is holding batters to a .154 average. Holte (4-5) has a team-best 2.37 ERA in 59.0 innings of work.

SCOUTING THE BLACK BEARS (11-13, 0-0 AE): Maine is coming off a two week trip in Clearwater, Florida. The Black Bears dropped the final two matchups of their trip, but enter league play two games under .500.

Sophomore Felicia Lennon leads the Black Bears' offense with a .329 batting average. Senior Jessica Burk and freshman Erika Leonard have each batted in a team-high 14 runs on the season. Leonard has also posted a .410 on-base percentage and leads the team with 12 stolen bases.

In the circle, senior Alexis Bogdanovich has registered a 1.57 ERA in a team-high 67.0 innings. The veteran is averaging 7.42 strikeouts per game and has allowed just 15 earned runs on the year.
