BALTIMORE – Due to soggy field conditions and incoming weather expected in the Baltimore area, the UMBC Spring Classic has received further updates. The Retrievers will host the five-team tournament from Saturday, March 14 through Monday, March 16 at UMBC Softball Stadium. The Retrievers will also host a pair of doubleheaders on Tuesday and Wednesday of Spring Break.
UMBC will play host to Siena, Sacred Heart, La Salle and Rhode Island for the 14th Annual UMBC Spring Classic, before hosting Mount St. Mary's and Lafayette in doubleheaders at UMBC Stadium.
SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS (2-9): UMBC dropped a rough one against Howard on Wednesday, stranding 11 runners on the base in the 5-4 loss. Freshman Tori Alexander extended her hit streak to a team-high seven games. The rookie is batting a team-best .440 and has added a team-best four stolen bases. Junior Danielle O'Neill has reached base safely in nine consecutive games, while senior Taylor Hall has registered a team-high .529 on-base percentage.
In the circle for the Retrievers, sophomore Jessica Holte has made six starts and tossed five complete games. She has logged 38 innings of work and struck out 28 batters. Rookie pitcher Kim Puccio made her fifth appearance of the season versus Howard. She has thrown 14.2 innings of work and fanned eight batters.
SCOUTING THE SAINTS (0-10): Siena returns to action for the first time since dropping five contests at the Osprey Invitational Feb. 27-March 1. The Saints are led offensively by senior Paige Lloyd's .370 batting average. She has tallied six extra-base hits and has a team-best eight runs batted in. In the circle, Danielle Cacciola has a team-best 4.85 earned run average after 17.1 innings of work.
SCOUTING THE PIONEERS (3-11): Sacred Heart returns to action a week after posting a 2-4 record at the Rebel Games. Senior Kate Nadler has registered a team-best .311 batting average, with five extra-base hits and four runs batted in. Pitcher Jamie Carlson has posted a 2-3 record in the circle. In her nine appearances Carlson has struck out 45 batters and registered a 2.77 ERA.
SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS (1-5): La Salle gets in its final three games before opening Atlantic 10 action. The Explorers return to action after dropping three out of four last weekend in Florida. Sophomore Christina Bascara is batting a team-best .308 on the year with a team-best three runs batted in. Junior Mary Cate Scott enters the weekend with a 0.56 earned run average. She has a 1-2 record in five appearances and has struck out 14 batters.
SCOUTING THE RAMS (0-11): Rhode Island returns to action after dropping three contests at the JMU Dukes Invitational last weekend. Junior Emily Hendericks is batting .273 on the season with a team-best nine hits. Sophomore Ali Summers has batted in a team-high four runs on four hits. In the circle, junior Caitlin Kennedy has made seven starts and 10 appearances, while sophomore Andrew Chiaradio has struck out a team-high 12 batters.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS (1-10): Mount St. Mary's returns to action over the weekend for the first time in over two weeks when it travels to Manhattan on Sunday and Monday, before making the trip to UMBC Stadium for a doubleheader versus the Retrievers on Tuesday. Freshman Morgan Alisauckas has driven in a team-best seven runs on four extra-base hits and has registered a .542 on-base percentage. In the circle, rookie Marian Ruf accounted for the Mount's lone victory, posting a 1-4 record in 24 innings of work.
SCOUTING THE LEOPARDS (0-9): Lafayette has a pair of doubleheaders scheduled before taking on the Retrievers on Wednesday. The Leopards have had troubles scoring runs in the early going of the season, scoring four runs in their nine games. Freshman Rebecca Dvorak and freshman Stephanie Thomas are each batting a team-best .250 from the dish. In the circle, sophomore Kristy Marinelli is holding opponents to a .253 batting average in her four appearances.
