BALTIMORE – UMBC wastes no time jumping back into action on Wednesday, April 2 with a midweek doubleheader against Howard. First pitch has been moved to 3:30 p.m. in Ellicott City, Md., at Kiwanis Park.
The Retrievers (20-11) dropped its America East opening doubleheader against Stony Brook on Tuesday afternoon. UMBC combined to strand 19 runners on base in the pair of one-run losses. Junior catcher Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) led the Retrievers offensively, registering a two-run home run for one of her two hits on the day and drawing four walks.
UMBC leads the America East in both batting average (.283) and ERA (2.67). Hall ranks second in the conference, hitting at a .398 clip, with a team-best seven home runs and 31 runs batted in. Freshman Jaclyn Buckley joins Hall and senior Chelsea Bertoglio (Laguna Hills, Calif./Laguna Hills/Saddleback College) in batting above .300 on the season. The rookie is hitting .313 with seven extra base hits and 19 runs batted in.
In the circle, freshmen Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee) and Nicole Casagrand (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) each rank in the top-four in the league in earned run average. Holte leads the America East with a 1.87 ERA, in addition to leading the country in walks per seven innings (0.47). Casagrand has posted a 4-2 record in 10 appearances and ranks fourth with her 2.88 ERA.
After winning its season-opener to George Washington, Howard (1-18) has dropped 18 straight games, including Monday's doubleheader to Norfolk State. Senior Anasia Stinson leads the squad with 13 hits, three RBI and a .342 batting average. Freshman Imani Ballard has a team-best five extra base hits and nine runs batted in. In the circle, senior Ashley Turner is posting a team-low 4.05 ERA in five appearances. Freshman Alex Flynn has tossed five complete games and has the team's lone victory.
