UMBC Softball Hopes to Dodge Rain at the UNCW Seahawk Clash

BALTIMORE – Despite rain in the forecast, UMBC softball is set for its second tournament of the season, when it travels to the 2013 Seahawk Clash, hosted by UNC-Wilmington on Saturday, Feb. 23 and Sunday, Feb. 24.

The Retrievers will take on Morehead State and UNCW twice over the weekend. UMBC opens against the Eagles at 4 p.m. and follows with a 8:30 first pitch against the Seahawks. The Retrievers will have rematches against both, starting with a 10:15 a.m. contest versus Morehead State and concluding the weekend with a 12:30 p.m. matchup with UNCW.

UMBC (0-5) looks to get in the win column after dropping five at its season-opening tournament, the Jimmy John's Lion Classic II.

The black and gold fell in six innings in its opener, 13-5, to host Southeastern Louisiana. The Retrievers dropped a 14-5 decision in five innings to Texas Southern on Saturday and followed with a tough 7-6 extra inning loss to LSU-Alexandria. UMBC closed out the weekend dropping a 9-4 decision to South Dakota and a 13-2 loss in five innings to South Dakota State.

Newcomer Chelsea Bertoglio (Laguna Hills, Calif./Laguna Hills/Saddleback College) batted .500 (6-for-12) over the weekend, with a pair of doubles and a home run to earn America East Player of the Week honors from College Sports Madness, while sophomore catcher Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) led the team with 10 RBI. Junior shortstop Caitlin Chance (Easton, Md./Easton) recorded a team-best seven hits in the leadoff spot for the Retrievers and finished the weekend with a .412 average.

UMBC used all five of its pitchers over its first weekend of action, with each one earning a start in the tournament. Sophomore Miranda Clark (Tampa, Fla./H.B. Plant) saw a team-high 7.2 innings in three appearances and held opponents to a .281 batting average. Bertoglio enters the weekend with a team-low 4.20 ERA in five innings of work.

Morehead State (1-3) opened its season at the Felsberg Memorial Tournament in Miami, Fla. The Eagles defeated Binghamton, 2-1, before falling to Connecticut and dropping two to host Florida International. Junior infielder Stephanie Etter, who was named an All-Ohio Valley Conference Second Team selection by College Sports Madness, leads the team with a .438 batting average and added three runs scored and three RBI in the tournament. Senior pitcher Katie Pfost earned the only win of the weekend and finished the tournament 1-1 with two complete games, two earned runs allowed and 13 strikeouts.

UNCW (4-6) returns home from the Florida Lipton Invitational to host its second tournament of the season. The Seahawks dropped four of five in Gainesville, Fla., including a pair of five inning contests to No. 5 Florida. Offensively, UNCW is led by senior infielder Lauryn Buckworth, who is batting a team-best .538 with seven RBI. Freshman CJ Moose has launched two round-trippers and five RBI on the year and is posting a .667 slugging percentage in her first season in Wilmington, N.C. In the circle, sophomore Casey Rowland has a team-low 5.29 ERA and has a team-best 22 strikeouts, while sophomore Jordyn Schmidt adds a 2-1 record in six appearances.

Due to the high probability of rain on Friday, Feb. 22, UNC-Wilmington was forced to cancel games on day one of the Seahawk Clash and has updated the schedule according. Below is the updated tournament schedule.
