BALTIMORE – Freshman catcher Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) of the softball team was named UMBC's Athlete of the Month for May 2012 in a poll conducted from June 1-11. Hall earned 47% of the vote to win the vote over track and field's Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) and Malte Bertram (Einbeck, Germany/Goethschule Gymnasium) as well as baseball'sBrian Klukowicz (Clifton, N.J./St. Peter's Prep).
During the Retrievers' only series in the month of May, Hall went 5-for-10 with two homeruns and three RBIs against America East champion Boston University.
A week later, Hall was rewarded for her performance on the field by being named the America East Co-Rookie of the Year along with Albany's Vicky McFarland.
In her first season for the Retrievers, Hall finished second on the team and seventh in the America East in batting, registering a .367 average (55-for-150) to go along with a conference-best 15 doubles. In addition, she accumulated 94 total bases during her freshman year to place second at UMBC and fifth in the league.
In the field, splitting time between catcher and first base, the rookie posted a UMBC-best .992 fielding percentage, making only two errors in 252 chances for the Black and Gold.
