STARKVILLE, Miss.—UMBC junior utility player Katie Ferguson(North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) was named to the 2011 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I Mid-Atlantic All-Region Team, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced Thursday.Ferguson now advances to the national ballot for All-America recognition.
Ferguson had an outstanding inaugural campaign at UMBC after earning junior college All-America honors at Cecil College in 2010. An America East All-Conference first team selection and UMBC's team co-MVP, she batted .340 with 51 hits, including eight doubles and eight home runs. In addition, she drove in 29 runs and tied for the team lead with 37 runs scored. Ferguson stole seven bases in 10 attempts and walked 14 times for a .409 on-base percentage, second-best on the team.
Also an outstanding fielder, Ferguson committed just four errors in a team-high 296 chances at first base, in the outfield and in the circle for a .986 fielding percentage. In addition, she posted a 4-3 record and a 3.14 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 51.1 innings of work.
Ferguson is the first Retriever selected to an NFCA all-region team since Melanie Denischuk in 2006, and she is the seventh Retriever ever to earn first-team honors.
The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all honorees are now eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams, which will be announced on Wednesday, June 1.
