CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—UMBC freshman shortstop Jessica Warner (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) was named America East Rookie of the Week for the week ending April 10, the conference announced Monday.
Warner batted .615 (8-for-13) and slugged 1.077 in four games last week. Four of her hits went for extra bases, as she belted three doubles and a home run while knocking in four runs and scoring three, and she posted three multi-hit efforts.
Warner went 6-for-10 in the three-game set with Boston University over the weekend. She accounted for both of UMBC's runs with a two-run homer – her fourth of the season – in the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday, then went 3-for-3 with two doubles in the nightcap, a 5-1 Retriever victory.
Warner is batting .500 (13-for-26) during her current eight-game hit streak, which has raised her season average from .242 to .315 and is tied for the longest on the team this season. Just a freshman she ranks second on the team with seven doubles and 23 RBIs.
Warner is the first Retriever to earn America East Rookie of the Week honors since teammate Heather Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) on March 8, 2010.
The Retrievers return to action on Thursday, when they visit in-state rival Mount St. Mary's for a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. The games were originally scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, but were postponed due to impending rain in the forecast.
