Six Retrievers Selected to UMBC Spring Classic All-Tournament Team

BALTIMORE—Seniors Lauren Brummell (Hanover, Va./Hanover), Julia Culotta (Street, Md./North Harford/Tennessee), Lynn Pronobis (Waldorf, Md./McDonough) and Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding), junior Katie Ferguson (North East, Md./North East) and sophomore Ashley Scroggin (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) were named to the UMBC Spring Classic All-Tournament Team, UMBC head coach Joe French announced Monday.


Brummell batted .412 (7-for-17) and slugged .706 with a team-best 12 total bases in four games last weekend. The second baseman recorded two doubles and a home run, scored four times and tied for the team lead with five RBI.


Culotta batted .333 (5-for-15) and slugged .733 with 11 total bases. The left fielder hit two homers, drove in five and scored a team-best seven runs. She also walked twice and was a perfect 2-for-2 on the base paths.


Pronobis batted .313 (5-for-16) with a double, a triple, four RBI and five runs scored. The center fielder also had two stolen bases on the weekend. Weigman went 2-0 with a 3.73 ERA and six strikeouts in 15.0 innings of work, pitching a pair of complete games.


Ferguson batted .467 (7-for-15) with a double, four RBI and four runs scored. The first baseman also walked twice and stole three bases, and she handled 24 errorless chances. Ferguson had a pair of three-hit games, including a 3-for-5, 3-RBI, 2-run effort against Morgan State. In addition, she went 2-0 with a 1.62 ERA and four strikeouts in 8.2 innings of work on the mound.


Scroggin batted a team-best .583 (7-for-12) and slugged .917 with 11 total bases. The right fielder recorded a double and a home run, drove in three and scored four runs, and she also walked three times. She put together three straight two-hit games, including a 2-for-3, 2-RBI, 2-run effort againstNiagara, when both of her hits went for extra bases.


The Retrievers had an outstanding weekend at the plate, batting .364 as a team and averaging 9.0 runs per game while winning all four contests to take the Spring Classic championship. They were 11-for-14 in stolen base attempts and also walked 17 times.


The Retrievers return to action on Tuesday, when they host Temple in a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
