UMBC Cross Country Set to Compete at NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC cross country will conclude the season at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals on Friday morning, hosted by Lehigh University. The Retrievers are coming off a seventh-place finish by the women and eighth-place finish by the men at the America East Championships at the beginning of the month.

Last Time Out (America East Championships:

Margo Henley (Akron, N.Y.) paced the women with a 26th place finish while freshman Michael Belmaggio (Frederick, Md./Linganore) earned a 39th place finish to lead the men against a tough field of competitors at the America East Championships. 

Henley finished in a time of 18:09.52 to pace the women's squad. Morgan Casey (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery-Blair) and Emmy Beyer (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) were just behind Henley in 29th (18:12.57) and 31st (18:14.81) respectively. Seniors Kaya Knake (Canton, Mich.) and Briana Roberts (Pennsauken, N.J.) rounded out the scorers with finishes of 34th and 35th in times of 18:26.86 and 18:27.33.

UAlbany's Hannah Reinhardt repeated as individual champion with a time of 16:45.74. New Hampshire earned the team title with four of their five scorers finishing in the top ten, with number five taking 11th. Vermont, Stony Brook, and host UAlbany rounded out the top four.

Belmaggio led the men's side with a 39th place finish in a time of 25:21.34. Taylor Baranoski (Parkville, Md./Eastern Tech) was the second-fastest Retriever across the finish line taking 48th in 25:37.52. Trent Rose (Clarksville, Md./River Hill), Hugh O'Connor (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park), and Chris Thoms (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) rounded out the top five. Rose finished in 52nd with a time of 25:44.60 with O'Connor taking 53rd (25:48.66) and Thoms taking 56th (25:52.45).

Christopher Alfond from UMass Lowell won the individual title on the men's side crossing in a time of 23:38.26. Stony Brook won the team title with all five scorers finishing in the top eight, with the first three finishing two through four. UMass Lowell, Vermont and New Hampshire rounded out the top four. 

Last Time at the Regionals (Men, 2017):

The UMBC men's cross country team concluded its 2017 by competing in the NCAA Regional Championships at Lehigh University. The Retrievers placed 19th of the 26 teams in the race. 

Senior Urgy Eado and junior Nathan Nadal crossed the line nearly simultaneously, as Eado placed 90th and Nadal 91st in times of 32:13.0 and 32:13.2 respectively over the 10k course.

Matthew Kane, Rhys Burgett and sophomore Matt Bennett also scored for the Retrievers. Kane (121) crossed the line in 32.42.5, Burgett (127) finished in 32:58.9, while Bennett (128) came in at 33:03.6

Princeton won the meet, while Georgetown's Jonathan Green placed first overall in a time of 30:28.3.
