CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC sophomore Hassan Omar (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) was named the America East Men's Cross Country Performer of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday morning.
Omar paced the UMBC squad to a seventh-place finish, tied with conference rival Binghamton, this past weekend at the Princeton Invitational in a school record time. The sophomore completed the 8k West Windsor Field course in a time of 24:21, surpassing teammate Brandan McGee's (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) top time of 24:45.65 set at last year's competition at Princeton. Hassan finished 16th overall in the race and has now led the Retrievers across the line twice this season and scored in each of the team's four meets.
Despite the seventh-place finish in New Jersey, the men's cross country team slid back a slot in the latest USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic poll, but still holds a spot in the top-ten at No. 10. The Retrievers moved up to ninth in the Oct. 7 poll, the highest the team has ever been ranked in the region.
The Retrievers have a weekend off before heading back to upstate New York for the America East Championships at Binghamton on Nov. 2. The men won the Pre-Conference Meet at BU back in September, while the women placed third.
