UMBC Track and Field Heads to Great Dane Classic on Saturday

Baltimore, Md.-- UMBC track and field returns to action after a month long hiatus to compete at the Great Dane Classic on Saturday in Staten Island. The Retrievers last competed at the Fastrack Season Opener on December 1 to kick off the indoor season. The Retrievers had a strong showing as they prepare for the America East Championships in February.

Last Time Out (Fastrack Season Opener):

Kelechi Nwanaga led the women's side with a first place finish in the shot put with a toss of 13.92m. Her throw was the sixth best mark in school history. Amani Wallace also turned in a first place finish in the 400m dash. Wallace crossed the finish line in a time of 57.89.

Tori Johnson added a top ten finish, placing sixth in the 500m dash in a time of 1:17.37. Sofia Zarate placed 16th in the mile (6:00.19), Collese Daley placed 13th in the 400m dash (1:00.01) and Ariella Garcia placed 13th in the 500m dash (1:19.62) to help pace the women on the day.

Manos Kamtsiklis led the men in the weight throw. He took first place with a toss of 17.30m, eighth best in school history. Isaiah Jensen and Rodney Sachiti also earned top ten finishes in school history in the 500m run and the triple jump. Jensen finished in a time of 1:05.03, eighth fastest in program history while Sachiti placed fifth in the triple jump with a jump of 14.03, tenth best in school history.

Brian Nelson earned a top ten finish in the 400m dash with a time 49.96 in seventh place. Peter Antonetti took 12th in the mile (4:34.50) with Sean Wissman taking 15th in the 400m dash (50.84) and Nick Gabrielli taking 11th in the 800m run (2:01.21) to round out the top runners.

Maurice Johnson and Trenson Terry added top ten finishes in the field events in the shot put (8th, 14.66m) and long jump (5th, 6.67m) respectively.

Last Year at the Great Dane Classic:

For the men, Ifa Eado led the way, earning silver in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:54.17. Brian Nelson finished sixth in the preliminary run of the 60 meter dash, and placed sixth in the finals with a time of 6.88.  Nelson also fourth place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.88.

In the 4x400 meter relay, the team of Nelson, Jamal Cody, Andrew Daniels, and James Oakley III placed eighth off a total time of 3:21.576. Taylor Baranoski ran a time of 4:16.14 to finish seventh in the mile run.

On the field side, Russell Bowman finished tenth in the weight throw with a distance of 14.70 meters.

For the women, Kelsey Ponton had the Retrievers' highest finish of the meet, coming in sixth in the 5000 meter run.  Ponton ran a time of 18:17.53. Aliya Sharp had a strong run in the 60 meter dash, finishing eighth with a time of 7.99.

Yinka Alabi recorded a time of 9.44 in the 60 meter hurdles, putting her at ninth in the event. Briana Roberts placed tenth in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:20.235.

The Retrievers will be back in action next Friday, Jan. 18 when they head back to the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex for the NYC Gotham Cup.
