Track and Field Heads to Penn State National and George Mason Invitational This Weekend

Baltimore, MD – UMBC track and field will continue their indoor season this weekend when the team splits, with half heading to the Penn State National and the other heading to the George Mason Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Penn State National Info:

When: Friday and Saturday, January 26-27.

Last Time Out (NYC Gotham Cup):

Senior Courtney Mattson took the bronze in the women's 5,000m with a time of 18:49.22 to lead the women.  Along with Mattson, freshman Collesse Daley took eighth in the 400m dash running a time of 58.64.

In the 200m dash, junior Erin Patrice finished in ninth place with a time of 25.92, and freshman Ariella Garcia finished tenth in the 800m run with a time of 2:21.02.

Senior Ricca Graham placed tenth in the weight toss with a distance of 13.27m.

For the men, junior Eric Smart also took bronze in the 5,000m with a time of 15:36.55 to lead the team.  Sophomore Brian Cave took eighth place in the 3,000m run, crossing the line in 8:57.86.

Juniors Jamal Cody and Nathan Nadal each took one ninth place finish.  Cody recorded a time of 49.64 in the 400m dash, while Nadal finished the mile in 4:22.57.

Last Year at The Penn State National:

The men had multiple top five finishes over the competition last year, being led by Urgy Eado taking gold in the 1,000m run with a time of 2:27.88.  Eado also helped the medley relay team of himself, Miles Smith, John Oputa, and Rami Phillips to fourth with a time of 10:11.29.

Brian Nelson and James Oakley took third and fourth respectively in the 200m dash.  Erick Soetje also took home a third-place finish in the 500m dash with a time of 1:04.27.

Tori Johnson led the women last year, with a first-place finish in the 500m dash, running a time of 1:16.16.  Amani Wallace and Funmi Damarola each placed in the top seven, with Wallace finishing sixth in the 200m dash with a time of 25.15, and Damarola crossing the line seventh in the 400m dash in 57.94.

Erin Patrice and Sophia Cologer also earned seventh place finishes.  Patrice in the 60m dash (7.75) and Cologer in the 5,000m run (17:31.28).

Last Year at the George Mason Invitational:

The men were led by Christian Kallenbergin the field in the heptathlon, finishing third with a score of 4,729.  Alexios Prodanas also brought home a third-place finish with a toss of 16.55m in the weight toss.  Russell Bowman finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 14.02m.

Scott Boettinger led on the track, finishing fourth in the 500m dash with a time of 1:09.80.  Kyle Kulp placed sixth in the same event with a time of 1:10.03.  Marcus Foster and Andrew Daniels each earned fifth place finishes, Foster in the 200m dash (23.14) and Daniels in the 60m hurdles (8.62).

Yinka Alabi took home gold in the 200m dash crossing the line in 26.20, while Bridgett Redding and Kelsey Ponton finished fifth and sixth respectively in their events.  Redding in 800m in 2:22.45, and Ponton in the 3,000m run in 10:51.65.

Up Next:

The Retrievers will travel back to State College, Pa. next weekend to partake in the two-day Sykes and Sabock Challenge on February 2-3.
