Tony White and Kelechi Nwanaga earned Second Team and First Team All-American honors by United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday. Both advanced to the NCAA Championships in the javelin last week, with White placing 16th and Nwanaga finishing fourth in Oregon.
Baltimore, Md. – UMBC track and field will send senior Tony White and freshman Kelechi Nwanaga to compete in the NCAA Championships, hosted by the University of Oregon at Hayward Field. Both will be taking part in the javelin throw.
Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC track and field team heads south to Tampa Bay, Florida on Thursday where five members will be competing in the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds. These five Retrievers are Kaya Knake (800m), Kelechi Nwanaga (javelin), Jamal Cody (400m hurdles), Alexios Prodanas (hammer throw), and Tony White (javelin).
Princeton, N.J. – Senior Russell Bowman earned first in the IC4A shot put event on Sunday in New Jersey as the track and field team completed the ECAC/IC4A Championships. Bowman’s winning throw went a distance of 16.78m.
Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC track and field team will send 26 members to Princeton, New Jersey this weekend for the 2018 IC4A/ECAC Championships. These members include America East Champions Kaya Knake, Kelechi Nwanaga, and Brian Nelson, as well as the conference champion men’s 4x100m team and the women’s 4x800m team and 4x400m team.
Baltimore, Md. – Kaya Knake broke the America East and UMBC 800m record on her way to a first-place finish at Sunday’s America East Outdoor Championships at UMBC Stadium. Knake’s time was 2:07.23. Brian Nelson earned the America East title in the 100m dash with a time of 10.62 and in the 200m dash with a time of 21.42.
Kaya Knake broke the UMBC record in the 800m event, running a time of 2:07.9 to win her preliminary heat. Not to be outdone was Kelechi Nwanaga, who set a school and conference record in the javelin with a throw of 53.08m on day one of the America East Championships.
Philadelphia, Pa. – James Oakley III, Brian Nelson, John Oputa, and Noel Njem led the Retrievers to a first-place finish in Saturday’s 4x200m Eastern Finals at the Penn Relays. The team finished the event in 1:26.25.
Philadelphia, Pa. – Freshman Kelechi Nwanaga finished in fourth place in Thursday’s javelin throw at the Penn Relays after throwing 51.92m. This distance is the furthest in school history, breaking her own record from earlier in the season.
Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC track and field squad continues their outdoor season this weekend, when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa., to take part in the Penn Relays. This event will be their final event until the UMBC hosted America East Outdoor Championships next weekend.
Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC track and field team will hit the road on Saturday when they travel to Pennsylvania to participate in the Bucknell Team Challenge. This will be the second time this year the Retrievers will head to Bucknell, as they traveled there for the first event of the indoor season.
Fairfax, Va. – Sophomore Brian Nelson led the way for the UMBC track and field squad on Saturday, placing first in the 200m dash, and third in the 100m dash. Nelson ran 21.43 in the 200m and 10.79 in the 100m. The sophomore ran the sixth fastest time in the 200m.
Baltimore, Md. – UMBC track and field travels to George Mason for the second time this season on Saturday to take part in the Mason Spring Invitational. They will look to build off their strong showing last weekend.
Baltimore, Md. – UMBC track and field takes the trip to New Jersey this Friday to build off their strong outdoor season start last weekend in Gainesville, in which the Retrievers saw multiple members qualify for NCAA prelims as well as the IC4A/ECAC.
Gainesville, Fla. – Freshman Kelechi Nwanaga shattered the school record in the javelin throw in her first career attempt, throwing a distance of 49.57m. The freshman earned third place in the event after her final attempt went a distance of 51.64m.
Gainesville, Fla. – Sophomore Alexios Prodanas took home first place today when threw a near-personal best distance of 64.76m in the hammer throw event. Along with the victory, Prodanas also qualified for the NCAA prelims.
Baltimore, Md. – UMBC track and field head south for their first outdoor meet of the season, traveling to Gainesville, Florida to compete in the Pepsi Florida Relays beginning on Thursday at 2 p.m., hosted by the University of Florida.
Boston, Mass. – The UMBC track and field completed the second and final day of the America East Indoor Championships on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Kaya Knake took fourth place in the 800m run with a time of 2:10.97, setting a school record with her time.
