State College, Pa.—Sophomore Jamal Cody led the Retrievers on day one of the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup with a win in the 60m hurdles on Friday.
Cody finished the prelims in second place with a time of 8.28 before taking the finals in a time of 8.17.
Brian Nelson and Afees Abolurin earned spots in the finals of the 60m dash going 7.04 and 7.09 in the prelims. Nelson earned silver in the finals with a time of 7.00 while Abolurin finished sixth in 7.13.
In distance events, Elijah Hawkins earned a second place finish in the 5,000m run with a time of 15:15.94. Eric Smart and Luke Kessler also finished in the top six of the race with times of 15:26.17 (third) and 15:39.68 (sixth).
Alexios Prodanas took fourth in the weight throw to lead the field events, with his best toss coming at 17.17m (56'4").
The women saw Erin Patrice take sixth place in the finals of the 60m dash with a time of 7.77. Yinka Alabi earned fifth in the 60m hurdles, crossing the finish line in 9.08.
Chelsea Vane and Kelsey Ponton led the Retriever distance runners with sixth and seventh place finishes in the 5,000m run. Vane took sixth with a time of 18:09.26 while Ponton finished seventh in 18:18.34.
The distance medley team was the lone relay to compete on Friday, as the quartet of Briana Roberts, Tori Johnson, Kaya Knake, and Sophia Cologer took silver in a time of 11:57.66.
The Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup concludes on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m.
