Raleigh, N.C.—Senior Hassan Omar (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) broke the school record in the 10,000m run, finishing 13th in the event to lead UMBC on day one of the Raleigh Relays. Several Retrievers posted top times on Friday in North Carolina.
Omar finished the distance race with a time of 29:31, breaking the previous school best time of 30:17 set all the way back in 1985. The time for Omar puts him in the range to qualify to the NCAA Preliminaries in May.
Erick Soetje earned a top 20 finish in the 400m run, finishing in a time of 48.49, the sixth fastest time in school history in the event. Urgy Eado turned in a top ten time in school history, placing 29th in the 1,500m with a time of 3:54.45, good for sixth best all-time. Jamal Cody earned a 26th place finish in the prelims of the 110m hurdles, crossing the tape in a time of 14.91.
Isahq Rana had the best finish of any Retriever on the day, taking third in the shot put with a toss of 17.23m. He followed that up with a ninth place finish in the discus with a throw of 45.46m.
The women were led by Mercedes Tillman and her 15th place finish in the 100m prelims, where she finished in a time of 11.95. Madeleine Entwistle turned in a top 25 performance in the 100m hurdles, taking 23rd in the prelims with a time of 14.61.
Ozi Edokobi led the women in the field events, taking home 16th in the shot put with her best toss of 13.39m. Her sister, Nneoma Edokobi, finished the event in 22nd with a throw of 12.96m.
Day two of the Raleigh Relays will commence at 9 a.m. from N.C. State. All the action can be followed on ESPN 3.
