State College, Pa.—Several Retrievers competed on the first day of the Penn State National Open on Friday. Senior Hassan Omar led the pack with a fourth place finish in the 5,000m run.
Omar took third with a time of 14:34.28, the best finish of any Retriever on the day. Classmate Daryian Miles finished 17th in the 60m dash prelims, crossing the tape in a time of 6.96.
A triad of Retrievers took to the heptathlon, as Christian Kallenberg took first in the shot put portion with his best toss of 14.20m. Kallenberg out-threw Vincent Rentzsch, who finished with a toss of 13.91m.
On the women's side, Sophia Cologer paced the Retrievers with a 14th place finish in the 5,000m run. The Annapolis native finished in a time of 17:51.88. Seniors Harmony Roche and Nicole Dawson also competed in the event with a 16th place (17:58.03) and 21st place finish (19:13.04) respectively.
Nneoma Edokobi led UMBC in the field events, taking 16th in the weighted throw with a toss of 15.98m. Classmate Jennifer Nelson placed 21st with a throw of 14.72m.
Day two of the event begins at 9 a.m. tomorrow, January 30. The men and women will also be competing at the Terrapin Invitational tomorrow starting at 10 a.m.
