UMBC Track and Field Heads to Penn State National Open and Terrapin Invitational This Weekend

Baltimore, Md.—The UMBC track and field teams will split this weekend, with some heading to the Penn State National Open, and others to the Terrapin Invitational. The Retrievers will return to action for the first time since they ran at the Great Dane Classic on January 16.

Penn State National Open Info:

Where: Ashenfelter III Indoor Track – State College, Pa.

When: Friday and Saturday, Jan. 29-30 – Friday (4:30 p.m.) and Saturday (10 a.m.)

Terrapin Invitational Info:

What: 2016 Terrapin Invitational

Where: Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex – Landover, Md.

When: Saturday, Jan. 30 – Starting at 9 a.m.

Last Time Out (Great Dane Classic):

The men were led by senior Hassan Omar, who earned a third place finish in the 3,000m, crossing the tape in a time of 8:23.34. Erick Soetje placed seventh in the 500m, clocking in at 1:04.76. 

Patrick Duboyce finished just outside the top ten, taking 11th in the 5,000m run. Duboyce crossed the finish line in a time of 15:24.77.

The lone relay contested was the 4x400m, in which the Retriever quartet of Niko Coaxum, Erick Soetje, John Oputa and Darrius Oxley took fifth in a time of 3:18.54.

In the field, Isahq Rana led the way with a pair of top ten finishes. Rana took fourth in the shot put with a toss of 16.38m (53'9") and placed eighth in the weighted throw with his best toss of 15.53m (50'11.5"). 

On the women's side, a trio of Retrievers finished near the top of their respective races. Angelina Oputa took 15th in the 800m run, clocking in at 2:18.04. 

Sophia Cologer had the best finish by a Retriever on Saturday, taking 12th in the 3,000m run, finishing in a time of 10:31.30. Harmony Roche added a 13th place finish in the 5,000m run, finishing the race in a time of 18:10.79.

The women's 4x400m relay team of Mercedes TillmanEssence FredericksNailah Johnson and D'Nique Phillip took ninth in a time of 3:55.24.

Nneoma Edokobi and Jennifer Nelson led the way in the field with an 11th and 13th place finish in the shot put and weighted throw. Edokobi had her best toss of 12.36m (40'6.75") while Nelson threw a 15.54m (51'0").

Next Up:

The Retrievers will return to State College for the annual Sykes & Sabock Challenge, hosted by Penn State. The meet will commence on Friday, Feb. 5 and conclude on Saturday, Feb. 6.
