Albino, Mezebish, and Omar Improve School Records at ECAC/IC4A Championships

BOSTON – UMBC seniors Jake Albino (Hampton, N.Y./Minisink Valley) and Cody Mezebish (Westminster, Md./South Carroll), as well as sophomore Hassan Omar (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson), each bettered school record times as the UMBC track and field team opened competition at the 2014 ECAC/IC4A Championships, Saturday at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center.

Competing against a regional field, all three athletes continued to rewrite program history.  Already the school record holder in the 1,000m event, Albino took hold of his second UMBC record on Saturday.  Albino entered the weekend with the fourth-fastest mile time in school history (4:08.97), but took over the top spot by edging past Izudin Mehmedovic's mark of 4:08.84 with a time of 4:08.12.  He placed second in his heat and now advances to tomorrow's final.

Mezebish made her last indoor meet memorable by clipping her own school record in the 800m run.  The senior, who claimed the school record at the America East Championships (2:12.44), trimmed her time further in Boston by clocking in at 2:11.81.

Omar, meanwhile, broke the school record in the 5,000m run for the second time this year.  Having broken the 33-yeard old record back in early February at the Armory Collegiate Invitational (14:32.71), the sophomore lowered his best time by over two seconds in Boston, placing ninth with a new program-best time of 14:30.02.

In the women's 500m run, sophomore Marie Yuille (Bowie, Md./Oakland Mills) and senior Deborah Adelola (Lanham, Md./Bladensburg) both set new personal-bests.  Yuille advances tomorrows finals after posting a time 1:14.04, the sixth-fastest of the day, while Adelola just missed out in 13th at 1:14.71.

Junior Charles Bolinger (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) nearly equaled his personal-best in the 800m run, finishing 27th with a time of 1:54.40.

The 2014 ECAC/IC4A Championships will continue on Sunday morning with the men's 60m dash semifinals.
