BOSTON – Looking to improve his standing to reach the 2014 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, senior Andrew Smith (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) bested his previous school record by .33 in the 800m run at the BU Last Chance Meet, Sunday at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center.
Smith, the 2014 America East champion in the event, came into the weekend tied for 24th, but jumped up to 16th in the nation in the 800m run by winning the race in Boston with a time of 1:48.82. The time, as of March 2, would advance Smith to the NCAA Championships.
Smith is looking to become just the sixth Retriever track and field athlete to advance to an NCAA meet. Last season, Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) competed at both the indoor and outdoor national meet and Vincent Rentzsch (Oranienburg, Germany/ Elite Sportschule Potsdam) joined her at the outdoor championships at Oregon.
Jackson also competed on Sunday, winning the 200m dash with a time of 24.13, just back of her top season time of 2.400 at the conference meet last week. Although she had a false start in the 60m dash in Boston on Sunday, Jackson ranks tied for 41st in the country in the event this season with her best time of 7.41.
The 2014 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships are set to run from March 14-15 in Albuquerque, N.M.
