LANDOVER, Md. – UMBC junior Alisha Beeman (Bridgeport, Conn./Bunnell/Hartford) cleared a new personal-best of 1.71m (5'0.75") in the high jump to break the UMBC school record as the UMBC track and field team competed at the Terrapin Invitational at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex.
Beeman's jump broke the previous school mark of 1.70m (5'7.25") set byChowan Brightful during the 2011-12 season and qualifies the junior for the ECAC Championships to be held in March. She was just one of multiple Retriever athletes to set new personal-bests on Saturday as much of the men's team competed at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md.
Also in Landover, sophomore Nneoma Edokobi (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) set a new personal-best in the weight throw, registering a heave of 15.26m (50'0.75").
Junior Paulette Fogle (Washington, D.C./Bishop McNamara) nudged her personal-best time in the 60m hurdles down to 9.27. Fogle also led a trio of Retrievers in the top-five in the 400m run, taking third with senior Deborah Adelola (Lanham, Md./Bladensburg) and junior Kalane' Abbey (Laurel, Md./Laurel) just behind.
Classmate Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) was once again the star in the 60m dash, cruising to victory with a finals time of 7.57, after leading the pack in the prelims with the same time. Sophomore D'Nique Phillip (Elkton, Md./North East) and senior Kirsten Jones (Brentwood, Tenn./M.L.K. Magnet) also advanced to the finals in the event, placing third and seventh, respectively. Jones also finished second in the 300m dash with a time of 40.79.
Adelola, Jones, and Abbey also combined with junior Briana Young (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) to best the field in the 4x400 relay, finishing with a time of 3:51.84, under the ECAC standard.
For the men, senior Tom Eldridge (Rocky River, Ohio/Rocky River) took top honors in the 5,000m run with a time of 15:27.51. Classmate Vinny DiSalvo (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) was the second across the line (15:34.00), giving UMBC a one-two finish.
Much of the UMBC men's squad competed at the Navy Invitational where the distance crew shined. SeniorsAndrew Smith (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) and Jake Albino (Hampton, N.Y./Minisink Valley) finished one-two in the 1,000m run, both qualifying for the IC4A Championships. Smith missed out on the school record in the event by .02, crossing the line at the 2:25.60 mark. Albino, meanwhile, now sits third in the school record book with his time of 2:26.27.
Senior Sean Cooper (Waldorf, Md./North Point/Delaware State) matched Jackson in winning the men's 60m dash. After leading the preliminary round (7.07), Cooper trimmed his time to 7.06 to capture the event. He also finished second in the 200m, crossing the line at 22.62.
In the pole vault, senior Liam Stott (Carrboro, N.C./Chapel Hill) matched his career-best by clearing 4.35m (14'3.25").
The Retrievers will hit the track again next week with athletes competing at the NYC Team Challenge and the Patriot Games.
