CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC junior Andrew Smith (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) was named the America East Male Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday afternoon. Smith's award continues the Retrievers' streak of gaining at least one of the four awards in each of the four weeks following a meet this season.
At the Terrapin Invitational this past weekend in Landover, Md., Smith outran the field in the 800m run, finishing in a time of 1:54.66. This time qualifies the junior for the IC4A meet at the end of the season and it currently stands as the fastest time in the America East this season. In addition, Smith's time ranks in the top-50 in the NCAA.
Smith is the fifth Retriever to win a weekly conference award this season after sophomore Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) started the team off by garnering an accolade after the season-opening Bison Opener on Dec. 1. Since then, seniors Trae Proctor (Brandywine, Md./Thomas Stone), Shioma Obemeata (New Rochelle, N.Y./Iona Prep/St. Francis) and Amanda Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen), as well as freshman D'Nique Phillp (Elkton, Md.), have all been honored.
UMBC returns to competition this weekend as the team splits up to compete in both the Penn State National Invitational and the Patriot Games.
